* Blinking lights on intersections, triggered by sensors, to warn vehicles that a bike is approaching
* Doubling the annual bike budget, from £7.5 million to £15 million
* Biking to the pub
I know I keep linking to that blog, but there are so many great ideas there. Have you seen how the Danes remind motorists of the speed limit?
Can we come too?
Beatrix did a one week course in Danish a couple of weeks ago…
“Peter and Ilsa are cycling to Esjberg” seemed to be the stock phrase to learn.
Cool that someone is taking Danish lessons, but…
“Peter and Ilsa are cycling to Esbjerg” has got to be one of the most useless sentences to learn in Danish… 🙂
1. I know a few Peters, sure, but there are only 51 women named Ilsa in the Kingdom of Denmark. Down 1 from 2006.
2. Nobody cycles TO Esbjerg. It’s on the far west coast of the country on the North Sea. Wherever you’re riding from, it’s a looooong ride.
🙂
Well I think the Ilsa and Peter in this story lived in Ribe, a very old town in the south west of Denmark. Can’t be so far to Esjberg from there.
Or maybe it was just a metaphor for the stock phrase book content – “Vladimir is on the collective farm” would not appear in an American English phrase book – but then I guess it wouldn’t appear in a modern Russian one either!!
Zak, keep up the great work. One day, we’ll organise a Darlington trip to see you.
Nearer to home and very important: don’t know if you’ve missed it (I did; somebody happened to tell me about it yesterday) but DBC are now conducting an opinion survey on cycling in the Ped Heart – see link tucked away here: http://www.dothelocalmotion.co.uk/Cycle/Cycleit.htm.
Thanks anonymous.
I’ve emailed the Council for advice to see if a post linking to the questionnaire would be
helpful or if it would cause the results be considered unrepresentative.
Obviously, I want as many pro-cycling responses as possible, but I also don’t want to give any anti-cycling groups a chance to dismiss
the findings of the survey.
Having said that, can I encourage anyone reading this to follow the link above and fill in the survey 🙂
The results have already been passed on for analysis, and the questionnaire’s removal requested. It sounds like your response won’t be counted; you might want to write in with your views instead.
A sample of Local Motion members were contacted about the survey, so a fairly large response should have been achieved. I happened to be in the sample, as did my wife, so the Cycle Campaign’s views have been put across. We have also submitted our own report and survey for consideration by the Council.
